July's Birthstone: Ruby

July's Birthstone: Ruby

  • Rubies are precious gemstones. Of all the gems that exist, only four have this classification. The other three stones are Sapphire, Diamond, and Emerald.
  • Rubies are mostly found in Thailand but are also mined in Madagascar, Sri Lanka, and India.
  • The name ruby comes from the Latin "rubens" which translates to red. The ruby is associated with beauty and wisdom.
  • Rubies also symbolize power and protection. Ancient warriors believed rubies helped them in battle.
  • The ruby comes in at a 9 out of 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. This means that only Diamonds are harder, making rubies an excellent choice for jewelry. The wearer doesn't have to worry about the stone getting damaged like softer stones will.
  • High-quality rubies weighing over 10 carats can actually cost twice that of a diamond of comparable size, because rubies are much rarer, especially the larger they are.
  • Rubies have inclusions. If a stone has zero inclusions, it's probably not real.
